ANGELS AMONG US?

In 1963, Roy Goodman was a 12 year old boy, running late from soccer and expected to sing a treble solo in the Cambridge King College Choir's rendition of Allegri's Miserere (Psalm 51). He arrived just in time to change clothing and hit his solo's high C perfectly. The choir's performance was being recorded and was broadcasted throughout the surrounding area. People who heard the singing thought it to be the voice of an angel because his tone was so unearthly beautiful.

Many years later, Goodman comments on that day objectively. He talks of the experience in narrative, with little mention of God or religion. However, he does let the listener in on one very personal thought when reflecting back on that brief moment in his life, for that song Goodman says that he was transformed into an angel.

From Northrop Frye -

VICO

1. Metaphorical (Gods) - origin of language, poetry

2. Metonymy (Aristocrats) - decline to talking about something rather than the thing talked about. i.e. Homer, Shakespeare

3. Demotic ("Men") - vulgar, descriptive. i.e. you, me

  • Myth - the language we use to talk about what we don't have language for, as in Genesis 1-11 (Frye
  • Literacy - being conscious of the way language is used (NOT just learning to read and write).
  • Logos - "the word" > metaphorical

- "the study of" > demotic

- "When you speak something it comes into being, by speaking you are involved in creating."

Bible can be approached in two ways.

1. Critical - scholarly, objective (i.e. Biblical Foundations of Literature)

2. Traditional - religious, subjective (i.e. Sunday School)

These two approaches can coexist, they are just different ways of examining The Bible based on personal belief and what you wish to get out of reading the text.

Brief Timeline of Mythology (Creation)

1. Woman made the world

2. Woman with help of a consort, made the world (a snake)

3. Man creates the world from a Goddesses severed body

4. Man creates world alone
